July, 2026- Meru Betiri National Park

Very special experience at Sukamade Beach on remote south coast of East Java.
During the quiet night, observing a Mama Green Turtle laying eggs- she took a break at 108- auspicious number! Then came more totalling 135!

A million thanks to the rangers who are so dedicated to help preserve a next generation of turtles, gathering the eggs to keep them safe from predators. And watching Mama Turtle make her way quietly back to the sea felt quite emotional. It is amazing to imagine these turtles living at sea, migrating as far as Australia, and then returning to the same beach of their birth to lay their eggs.

After around 60 days, the turtles hatch and after about a week, they are ready to be released.

The next morning we got to help release some babies…

Amazing how their instinct carries them. But it is estimated that only 1 in 1000 babies survive to return years later to their home beach. Truly amazing and being a part of this miracle of nature, one can only feel in awe. May the turtles stay well and healthy!

Thanks to our wonderful guide Ocha from Java Turtle Lodge who guided us through the park. Her knowledge of the turtles, the flora and fauna in the park is truly her passion.

The road into Meru Betiri National Park is a rough, beautiful drive but done a few hours easily in the dry season – easier to cross the three rivers on the way to Sukamade.

Accomodations are simple at the national park guesthouse but delicious meals are served and the rangers are happy to share stories. It’s an unforgettable experience!

Although nesting activity happens year-round, the peak season to observe female sea turtles laying eggs at Sukamade Beach is from November-March in the rainy season.
Dry Season (May–October): Easier travel conditions and safer road treks to the remote beach, with moderate, steady turtle nesting activity.

Enroute about half-way from Banyuwangi town to Java Turtle Lodge,
stop to stroll through the Magical De Djawatan Forest with majestic Trembesi ( Rain Trees)!
Nice place for a drink or lunch as well.

Green Bay

Located just within the National Park is beautiful Green Bay- short drive from Java Turtle Lodge

A 1 km hike up and down steps or arrange a boat directly to the beach.

During rains, a fresh waterfall flows into the sea.
Best to have Java Turtle Lodge arrange a guide to accompany you and bring along water and snacks to enjoy this beautiful bay with shades of green and blue changing with the light.
